Romans 1-6 - Come Follow Me with Sam

 Welcome!

I'm quite a bit behind my posts! This is tragic because Romans is arguably my favorite book from Paul (hebrews included) The doctrine is so rich. Unfortunately, I'm going to be brief. You can use these as jumping off points and comment below what else you find.

Some cool verses

ch 1

14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the aBarbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

15 So, as much as in me is, I am aready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16 For I am not aashamed of the bgospel of Christ: for it is the cpower of God unto dsalvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

I'm not sure I got Paul's exact meaning, but here is a thought exercise. Paul regularly quotes or is quoted of greek thought. Here I feel like he is saying 'I have learned from everyone, now I am here to proclaim an even greater message, the message of Jesus Christ.

ch 2

Who will arender to every man baccording to his cdeeds:

To them who by apatient bcontinuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and cimmortality, eternal life:

But unto them that are acontentious, and do not bobey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, cindignation and wrath,

aTribulation and banguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the cGentile;

10 But glory, honour, and apeace, to every man that bworketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the cGentile:

compare this to D&C 121

25 For there is a atime bappointed for every man, according as his cworks shall be.

26 God shall give unto you aknowledge by his bHoly Spirit, yea, by the unspeakable cgift of the Holy Ghost, that has not been drevealed since the world was until now;

I realized there is a positive and a negative aspect to what paul is saying, a blessing and a cursing. Either way we get what is coming to us. We can choose to receive either the good or the bitter fruits according as our works shall be.

Ch3

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is ajustified by bfaith cwithout the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the aGod of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the bGentiles also:

30 Seeing it is aone God, which shall justify the bcircumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? aGod forbidbyea, we establish the law.

I apologize for bringing this up but as a christian church body we tend to really struggle interpreting this. The point of all of this (and read james and romans 2 for more context) is that if you are faithful, your works will surely manifest it. This whole faith v works is a false dichotomy. Yes, you can have works without faith, but you can't manifest faith unto salvation without also manifesting works, some 100 fold, some 50 fold, some 30 fold.
