D&C 98-101: Come Follow Me with Sam

 Welcome!

Section 98

All things shall be for your good

read Abinadai to understand

the constitution and leaders

There are a few great keys of government that come from 98. First, the constitution is a world heritage. It is not just a western idea or an American idea, although the Americans certainly deserve the credit for being able to both articulate it and put it into practice. for all the variances in peoples and all the criticisms of the American system, this is the closest to God's law that any of us in the world have ever seen, and, using the same words He has used in the past for scripture, God says that anything more or less than this cometh evil ("as pertaining to law of man").

Note Gods words here "I the Lord God make you free, herefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free." This is a point that I think the founding generation at least understood intellectually, but that wasn't perpetuated generally or across time. The Americans have been a bit of a rowdy bunch, which in many ways helps them maintain their liberty, but they many times support freedom to be barbaric, hedonistic, etc., in short to do whatever they want. But there is a law of freedom and there are responsibilities intrinsically tied to those freedoms, and if you don't shoulder the responsibility, you lose the freedom. A continual theme in the Book of Mormon was to 'choose that liberty wherewith God had made you free'. If you want to be free indeed, you need to choose God's freedom. Anything more or less than this will lead you down a hole of your own making.

God also asks for honest men, good and wise men and women. Needless to say, this is sorely lacking in American politics,  and in most political systems around the world.

The next piece

the next piece has so many ideas that it is hard to keep up. here are the basics

 - live by every word which proceedeth forth out of the mouth of God.

- live line upon line, precept upon precept.

- god is here to prove you. We discussed earlier that this is less of 'test' and more of 'refine, or even advocate for you (God will be your proof, your justification).

- if you abide not in the covenant, you don't get these promises

- renounce war and proclaim peace, or in other words, renounce disharmony and proclaim the peace of God, not as the world giveth, but as Christ only can give.

- tied with the last idea turn the children to their fathers, and the fathers to the children

- tied with the promises to Abraham of the house of Israel! (hot dang, but what does it mean?)

- Law of war and peace demonstrated in the rest of the scripture concerning fighting and forgiving
