D&C 67-70: Come Follow Me with Sam
Section 67
The Challenge
God actually gives a challenge to the brethren in this section. There was some dissent about the wording of the revelations that Joseph Smith received and God basically told them 'see if you can do better'. William McLellin tried. It didn't work. Everyone accepted the wording after that.
This raises some questions about how the Doctrine and Covenants was created, and the process by which the revelation was asked for, received, recorded, distributed, and accepted. Some of this is simple historical fact. Some of this is spiritual journey. Some of this is likely personally attuned. I unfortunately don't know enough or have enough time to ponder this on the blog but if you have resources to share, I'd be interested to hear.
Continue in patience until ye are perfected
Section 67 speaks of seeing God and a reminder that 'ye are not able to abide the presence of God now, neither the ministering of angels; wherefore, continue in patience until ye are perfected.
I did a simple search through my blog and found four places where I mention patience. Most relevant is probably my post on D&C 3-5 but there are also mentions in D&C 63, Moroni 7-9, and 3rd Nephi 20-26.
The basic point of these is that there is a specific type of patience you should be looking for and for these people, it was the key to abiding the presence of God, so it is so important that we understand what it means.
Section 68
the most important words in the D&C?
68:1-6 may be the most important verses in the entire D&C. Think about what this means
1 My servant, Orson Hyde, was called by his ordination to proclaim the aeverlasting gospel, by the bSpirit of the living God, from people to people, and from land to land, in the ccongregations of the wicked, in their dsynagogues, reasoning with and eexpounding all scriptures unto them.
2 And, behold, and lo, this is an ensample unto all those who were ordained unto this priesthood, whose mission is appointed unto them to go forth—
3 And this is the aensample unto them, that they shall bspeak as they are moved upon by the Holy Ghost.
4 And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the aHoly Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the bpower of God unto salvation.
5 Behold, this is the promise of the Lord unto you, O ye my servants.
6 Wherefore, be of good acheer, and do not bfear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you; and ye shall bear record of me, even Jesus Christ, that I am the Son of the living God, that I cwas, that I am, and that I am to come.
