Matthew 5, Luke 6 - Come Follow me with Sam
Welcome!
Hot takes on these chapters
Matthew 5
the beatitudes - We have trouble taking these for more than simple moralistic sayings. To overcome this, the first is to remember that all of these sayings have the implicit 'who come unto me' in them - these are promises to those who understand the gospel. The second part is to realize that Christ is truly talking about the Kingdom of Heaven here, whether that be on earth or in heaven proper - what we value today in babylon is of no value in this world Christ is describing. Third, we need to understand that these words were uttered by the master of earth and sky, of death and life, of ultimate suffering and ineffable joy. When we have born our burden and suffered in like manner as appropriate for us, we get these sayings. But that is the price.
persecution - Christ helps us understand how we become stronger from persecution
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall arevile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of bevil against you falsely, cfor my sake.
12 aRejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your breward in heaven: for so cpersecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Salt of the earth - if you want to be the salt of the earth, you need to stop living for yourself. Your purpose is to make the soup worth eating. If you don't want to be the salt of the earth, you can go along your way in life and hope for the best, but if you do want to be the salt of the earth, you need to live for more than your own enjoyment, you need to live to help your neighbor.
Let your light shine - I need to work on this more, but there is also not throwing pearls before swine.
Reconcile thy brother - if everyone around you is flawed, and you are not, and you simply judge them for that, you are missing part of the picture.
Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect - God gives the vision and creates the way - we just need to follow Him
Luke 6
The Law of the Sabbath - I categorized all scriptures in the old testament referring to the sabbath once. After that exercise, I realized why there is so much confusion about how to live the law of the Sabbath - almost all of those are 'do not' scriptures!!! The law of the sabbath is a higher law than most of us follow but we can slowly pick up what it means after studying christ's teachings and the creation.
Pharisees 'filled with madness' they were hypocrites and they knew it.
woe unto you... for you have received your consolation - in vs 24-26, Christ shows that these people are damned - they stopped their progression and don't have room for more until they let go of the wrong treasure
The house on the rock - both houses went through the same trials but one stood because of its anchor, the other fell because of its anchor.
